Bookkeeping and accounting experts weigh in on having purchasing discussions with their clients and the impact purchases have on profitability, tax savings, cash flow, and storage.<p>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"profitability\"><\/span>Profitability<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to purchasing inventory, Kim Sadler, Principal at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kim-sadler-18b99230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ellipse Accounting<\/a>, says, \u201cProfitability is obviously the first objective. The business needs to ensure the sale price at your required gross profit is acceptable to the market. The worst outcome is to have stock on your shelf or in the warehouse tying up cash. Or, having to sell at a loss to move them on.\u201d\r\n\r\nKim adds that bulk purchases at a discount \u201cmust be considered in terms of turnover and available cash reserves\u201d. Upcoming tax obligations need to be included when considering cash reserves. Rather than trying to grab a good discount, purchases should be aligned with the mission and vision of the business.\r\n\r\n\u201cControl allows you to manifest your vision and direction of the business.\u201d Says Kim Sheppard, Business Solutions Advisor at <a href=\"https:\/\/knoward.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knoward<\/a>.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"tax_savings\"><\/span>Tax Savings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nMichele Grisdale, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforestbookkeeping.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Director of Rainforest Bookkeeping<\/a>, says a purchasing discussion can help \u201creduce tax by utilising government incentives.\u201d She cautions this isn\u2019t a strategy for every business. Although the incentives are enticing, \u201cmany small and micro businesses don&#8217;t look at the overall cost to the business long term. A blanket approach is not practical.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe consequences of purchases on a business must be considered based on the return on the investment, the constraints of its industry, the amount of cash the business has available, and predictions for future industry trends.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"cash_flow\"><\/span>Cash Flow<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nThe effect of purchasing decisions on cash flow isn\u2019t just the obvious cash outflow. It\u2019s important to consider other things that can impact cash flow like a downturn in the market or training new staff. \u201cAsk a lot of questions about what will happen if the market slows or if they lose staff.\u201d Says Grisdale.\r\n\r\nWhen it comes to fixed assets, \u201cgenerally cost and useful life are key considerations.\u201d Says Matt Kennedy-Climpton, Senior Accountant at <a href=\"https:\/\/maharaccounting.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mahar Accounting<\/a>.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"storage\"><\/span>Storage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\nIt costs money to store excess inventory and equipment that\u2019s not being fully utilized. Consider purchases carefully, taking into account shelf-life and available storage space.\r\n\r\nBy having purchasing discussions with their clients, business advisors get a much better picture of the business. \u201cGeneral improvement in this area can be coached, and skills passed from advisor to client over time,\u201d says Kennedy-Climpton.\r\n\r\nSadler states that \u201cit&#8217;s too easy as a business owner to get caught up in the day-to-day work and not spend time on managing the business unless your advisor helps you make time and has the data available to make it worthwhile.\u201d\r\n\r\n<p>For accountants and bookkeepers seeking to grow closer advisory relationships with their clients, regular purchasing discussions is one of those low hanging fruit topics.
